Last week, pastors and SAMs from the La Crosse Area Synod gathered in Eau Claire for the Fall Theological Conference—a time set apart for worship, connection, rest, and learning together. This year’s focus centered on Fresh Expressions, a movement reimagining how the Church can meet people where they are. Many rostered leaders expressed gratitude for the chance to reconnect with colleagues and reflect on new ways of being church. One pastor shared, “It was such a joy meeting and interacting with colleagues—engaging in casual chats, meaningful discussions, and deep theological conversations alike! It always feels great!”

Keynote speaker Pastor Shannon Kiser guided participants through the heart of the Fresh Expressions movement, which encourages the formation of new Christian communities in everyday places—around shared meals, hobbies, or acts of service—especially among people who might never step inside a traditional church. Rather than replicating existing models, Fresh Expressions invites leaders to listen deeply, build authentic relationships, and allow the Holy Spirit to shape new forms of worship and community that reflect local rhythms and needs.

The Fresh Expressions Journey Six Steps

The Fresh Expressions journey unfolds in six simple, Spirit-led steps: Listening (attending to God and the community), Loving People (building relationships through genuine care), Building Community (creating spaces of belonging), Exploring Discipleship (cultivating faith naturally within relationships), Church Taking Shape (worship and mission emerging in context), and Doing It Again (multiplying new expressions and leaders).

Thanks to the Conference Deans, Pastor Liptack and Bishop Malpica for facilitating this meaningful gathering of learning, worship, and renewal.
