Synod Spotlight: Nurturing Faith through Holy Play
There is a sound that returns to Luther Park each [summer].
It starts small. A few voices outside the cabins. Footsteps on the path. Laughter near the water. Then, before long, camp is alive again with the unmistakable sound of children at play.
It may seem simple at first. Running, singing, splashing, climbing, creating, imagining, laughing until they can hardly catch their breath. But at camp, we know play is never just play.
Play is one of the ways children learn who they are. It is how they test courage, build trust, practice kindness, and discover joy. It is how friendships begin. It is how confidence grows. It is how a child who arrived uncertain can slowly begin to stand a little taller.
At Luther Park, we often talk about Holy Play because we believe God is present in the joy, wonder, and freedom of camp. Faith formation does not only happen in quiet moments or carefully planned lessons. It happens when a camper helps another across a challenge course. It happens when a cabin group learns to listen to one another. It happens around a campfire, in a silly song, during a game, and in the wide open space where kids are allowed to be fully themselves.
There is something deeply sacred about giving children room to play.
In a world that often asks kids to grow up quickly, perform constantly, and carry more than they should, camp offers a different kind of gift. Time outside. Time away from screens. Time to wonder. Time to belong. Time to remember that they are loved by God, not because of what they accomplish, but because of who they are.
Summer at Luther Park reminds us that joy is not separate from faith. Joy can be part of how faith takes root. Laughter can soften hearts. Friendship can teach grace. Creation can open our eyes to God’s goodness. Play can become prayer before a child even has the words for it.
So as summer begins, we give thanks for the holy noise of camp. For the songs sung loudly. For the muddy shoes. For the questions asked under the stars. For the counselors who notice the quiet camper. For the children who arrive one way and leave changed in ways they may not fully understand for years.
Let them play.
Let them laugh.
Let them wonder.
Let them discover, again and again, that God meets us in joy too.
